How to plan a personal statement with WOW factor

14/10/2016

If you’re in Year 13, you’ve a hectic few months ahead. And if you’ve set your heart on a particular university course, it matters to make your personal UCAS application the best it can be.

Plan your personal statement first

Mindmap ideas before you do anything. Ask yourself first:

  • What specific course do you want to study, and why? What is the personal appeal for you?
  • In what way are you chiefly suited to this university subject? Think about your personality, experiences, motivations. To show you have an aptitude for it, think about when you first got excited in the subject. What have you learned about it and yourself since?
  • What have you done which reveals your deep interest in the course? Perhaps you have a blog. It’s not too late to start one! Perhaps you’re part of a debating team. Perhaps you help younger students learn in an after-school club?
  • Regarding experience, a simple list of what you’ve read or done isn’t enough. Universities want to know what you learned from those experiences. What insight did your involvement give you into your chosen field of study?

Remember: writing generic comments on a ‘personal’ statement won’t work. That’s why it matters to tailor each application to the specific course and institution.
