Revision Strategies That Just Work
Many students waste precious time revising incorrectly. With so little time before the exam season, it makes sense to build effective revision strategies into your timetable - starting now.
Smart revision ideas that make the most of your time
- Combine a variety of learning styles. Re-write notes as mindmaps or flash cards; record yourself reading out loud some key facts, then play it back. Set up a learning group with your peers and teach each other. It's amazing how powerful this is...
- Stick to a routine. The more regularly you revise, the faster you'll cover ground. 8 hours a day is excessive. It's far better to spend an hour with one subject - follwed by a break - and then switch to another subject afterwards. Don't just re-read your notes. Do something active with them. Study a period of history, for example, and then answer a question about it.
- Focus on what you struggle with. Facing your fears is what taking exams is all about. With time before the exams start, be honest about each subject. Whittle down those areas of the syllabus that you struggle with the most. Get help, ask a teacher, trawl YouTube, get a tutor. DO something!
- Study previous exam papers. Essential revision for every student taking GCSEs or A Levels this year. Investigate the sort of questions likely to be asked, note down any awkwardly expressed questions that throw you (and build these into your revision). Finally, do more timed tests using the exam papers. You could do just one section, or one paper - not all papers in one go. This is a brilliant way to familiarise yourself with exams, while putting your revision to good use.
